Design and Technology in Year 3 - Beautiful Boxes
Date: 19th Dec 2022 @ 2:24pm
For this term’s Design and Technology (DT) the children have been challenged to design and make a box. They were asked to design a box containing a small Christmas gift inside, for a member of the family. However, I have a sneaky feeling that the treats will be in their own tummies before the day is out.
The children have worked brilliantly together; helping each other with their DT skills such as measuring, cutting, joining, scoring and assembling.
We have explored 3D shapes by assembling cubes, prisms, cuboids and tetrahedrons from nets.
In their own words, here are the skills that the children have tackled.
“First, I planned and designed my product and decided what materials I should use.
Next, I examined a cereal box and took it apart to see how it was made. There were tabs, glue and folds.'
After, I made a prototype from thick paper so I could practise assembling my final product.
I used cutting, scoring, folding, assembling, attaching, decorating and finishing skills.”
From a teacher’s point of view, I thought the boxes were superb. This was a steep learning curve for the children and they thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
I have attached some photographs of the design process and their final product, which is beautifully adorned with Christmas decorations and a tasty surprise inside…Yummy!
