Courageous Advocacy

We recognise Courageous Advocacy as more than raising money for causes. Although, we have two focused missions locally and globally which we support with donations and monetary offerings, we also focus on 'Respect' as a focus for our Courageous Advocacy.
As part of our Christian vision, we try and support where we can locally and around the globe. As a church school, helping others is one part of our Courageous Advocacy and we have two projects (one local and one global) here at school.
Our local Courageous Advocacy focus this year is ‘Littering on Wardley Park'. Our School Council visited each class to discuss local issues which the children thought were a concern and the key theme that ran through every class was the problem of littering, particulary on our local park. The School Council did an amazing job generating ideas and discussing these issues with all of the children. They also spoke to them about what we, as a school, could do about it.
They have decided, after many consultations with all of the children, that we should contact our local council about placing more litter bins in the park. They also want to contact The Friends of Wardley community group who organise many events in support of the local park. A litter-picking session has been suggested and the children are in the processof generating posters to promote this event and to encourage as many students, staff, governors, parents and carers as they can to come along and support the local group.
Our global Courageous Advocacy focus is ‘The Right to Learn’ – also suggested by our children after they learnt about the challenges faced by many children across the world through our collective worship based on material from Christian Aid, Action Aid and Plan International. All the children in the school are involved in sponsoring a young boy called Sullay who lives with his mother in the town of Port Loko in Sierra Leone through the Plan International sponsorship scheme. There is an annual fundraising activity to fund his sponsorship programme.
In addition to offering support through resources, we will also be learning from each other through shared learning experiences, discovery of other cultures, fostering global awareness and developing the values of the Wardley Way within our school community and the wider world.
We also carry out other fundraising to support many good causes, some of which include:
Salford Food Bank
The Wood Street Mission
MacMillan Cancer Relief
Save the Children
NSPCC
Sports Relief
Comic Relief
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
Winston’s Wish
The other important aspect of our school’s Courageous Advocacy is giving our children the platform each term to speak up about issues that they feel passionate about to the rest of the school. This builds upon our core Christian value of respect and provides the opportunity for our children to act with a strong moral purpose and promote their sense of justice. The children’s speeches are collected in our Courageous Advocates Big Book.
