International Day of Mathematics in Year 2
Date: 14th Mar 2025 @ 2:22pm
"Mathematics is the science of patterns, and nature exploits just about every pattern that there is." Ian Stewert
Today was International Day of Mathematics and we have had an absolutely brilliant day in Year 2! First, we looked at the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy, an artist and photographer who uses nature and its patterns to produce fabulous outdoor art installations. He uses natural materials to create semi-permanent sculptures. This includes earth, rocks, leaves, ice, snow, rain and sunlight. Then, we produced our own sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy, using natural objects and pattern.
Next, we looked at all the mathematical patterns that nature creates such as: the hexagons of a honeycomb, the spiral of a sea shell, the symmetry of a butterfly’s wing, the geometrical pattern of a spider’s web and the hexagonal pattern of a snowflake. After that, we used pasta and natural materials to create our own mathematical patterns.
