'Let's rock!' Science in Year 3
Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 7:58am
Year 3 scientists are studying rocks. This ties in very nicely with our History topic about The Stone Age.
We have compared the colour and texture of different rocks as well as learning their names and properties.
During our investigations the children are independently discovering the features and properties of rocks.
Here are some observations and knowledge that the class have shared with their friends.
‘One of our rocks were full of crystals and sparkled like glitter.’
‘We were able to write with two of the rocks. One was called graphite and is used to make pencils and the other was a soft rock called chalk.’
‘One of the rocks was really shiny and smooth while others were rough and sharp.’
‘Slate is flat and waterproof so you can use it for the roof on the top of your house.’
‘Pumice is really light and is full of little holes. It comes from a volcano. It is rough too which is perfect for getting rid of hard dry skin…Eugh!’
‘Our rock is really heavy even though it was small. Not all the rocks were heavy though.’
'This rock is black and shiny. It could be obsidian.'
Next, we will investigate rocks to test for hardness. We will use a scratch test to do this.
Year 3 will also create a fantastic investigation to test the permeability of rocks as well as learning about the fossils and the terms ‘metamorphic’, ‘sedimentary’ and ‘igneous’.
