Year 6 Visit Cenotaph
Date: 6th Nov 2024 @ 1:09pm
Year 6 visited Swinton Memorial Garden and Cenotaph this morning to further deepen their understanding of WWII.
There, we met with Glen Coston who is a local historian and member of the Memorial Garden Society.
The children learned about the purpose of the garden as well as the significance of every name in there.
We learned about a local man who was awarded the Vistoria Corss during WWII for his bravery and for going above and beyond his duty. He is buried in Swinton Cemetry along with his wife.
On the way home, we passed by cemetery so went in search of his grave which we knew would have the VC embossed in it's stone - we managed to find it!
We also saw several other war graves, all with different badges embossed in their stone to represent which of the armed forces they so bravely fought with.
It was an extrememly interesting morning and I am confident that the children learned lots from it. It has hopefully given them a deeper understanding of Remembrance Sunday and Remembrance Day which we will focus on during this coming week.
