Year 6 visit to the Swinton Cenotaph
Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 12:36pm
We visited our local cenotaph and memorial gardens in Swinton this week.
Here we met local historian Glen Croston who told us about some of our local heroes. We learnt about men who had fought in different wars from the Boer Wars in the late 1800s to more recent conflicts in Afganistan and Iraq. We also got to learn about some of our local men who have been awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for their bravery in past conflicts.
On the cenotaph are the names of 310 local men who fought and died during WWII. Some members of our class were able to find the names of the ancestors including one who was a Dambuster!
Within the memorial garden was a special plaque dedicated to those who fought in conflicts more further afield during WWII. In particular, it named local men who served and perished as POWs (Prisoners of War) in places such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Burma. There were 110 names on the plaque, all of whom lived in or had connections with Salford.
